What is so important about "scenario"?

As you might have completed your initial annotated bibliography focusing on "scenario" planning/technique/approach, can we discuss it now?. How and why has it become important in the literature? Who can tell me?

Scenarios are important as they provide us with alternative views of the future. However, they may be limiting as the data that is used is not based in fact. However, I believe that if we apply both a mechanistic and holistic approach to scenarios we will have a more realistic outcome.

But what is "scenario" planning different from the conventional planning?

Can anybody answer the following questions?:
1. What is the main philosophical assumption of "scenario" uses?;
2. What are "good practices" of the application of scenario planning?

So farm I received from those who use the "hear-say" about scenario. Can you do it better?

Scenario planning is flexible and allows radical and divergent changes, whereas the traditional approach is more linear and more rigid.
Scenario planning focuses on opening the mind’s eye to the underlying Macrotrends, whereas the traditional approach focuses on microtrend.

The philosophy of scenario planning is an interdisciplinary approach. It has many valuable applications as a tool to provide foresight into potential problems. However, when you examine ecological issues with scenarios, the situation becomes rather complicated. Mainly, it very difficult to understand the complexity of an ecosystem. Additionally, what inputs to include or exclude from any ecosystem scenario are difficult to determine. Thus, the scenario may not provide a very accurate result. I believe that ecological models will require more advanced methods. Currently, no one seems to be able to plan ecological outcomes with any degree of success (Cummings, Global Biodiversity Scenarios and Lanscape Ecology, 2006).
